Controversial businessman Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala and his co-accused, Musa Kekana, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, and Tsakani Matlala, have concluded their pre-trial conference at the Johannesburg High Court, facing serious charges including attempted murder.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Magaboke Mohlatlole, the court ordered the State to furnish the defence with the outstanding further particulars previously requested, by no later than April 7. The NPA said the accused face 25 charges, including 11 counts of attempted murder, arising from three separate shooting incidents allegedly committed between August 2022 and January 2024.
Charges and Allegations
The State further alleges that the accused orchestrated a shooting, laundered money linked to the alleged plot, and used a fraudulent invoice to conceal the source of the funds and mislead the court. The matter has been postponed to July 20, 2026, for trial.
Matlala and his co-accused are accused of committing the crimes in Gauteng, with the South African Police Service (SAPS) investigating the incidents. The case has sparked widespread interest, with many following the developments closely.
Previous Testimonies and Investigations
In a previous testimony at the Madlanga Commission, Sergeant Fannie Nkosi discussed his involvement in sharing confidential SAPS communications regarding the termination of a R360 million contract. The commission’s findings can be found on the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development’s website.
The accused’s legal team will have to carefully review the evidence presented by the State and prepare their defence strategy. The trial is expected to be highly publicized, with many waiting to see the outcome.
