Durban Chop Shop Uncovered: 5 Stolen Vehicles Recovered

A suspected vehicle chop shop was uncovered in Newlands, Durban, over the weekend, following the recovery of a stolen Toyota Fortuner. The discovery was made possible through a collaborative effort between private security companies and law enforcement agencies.

According to KwaZulu-Natal’s police spokesperson, Captain Ntathu Ndlovu, the Newlands East Police launched an inquiry into a local establishment on Inanda Road, suspected of operating as a vehicle chop shop. This followed the recovery of multiple vehicles and vehicle parts on the property on March 15.

How the Discovery Was Made

KZN VIP Protection Services’ spokesperson, Gareth Naidoo, explained that the suspected chop shop was uncovered following intelligence gathered on the stolen Toyota Fortuner. Information led members of various tracking companies, private security companies, and KZN VIP’s reaction units to a property off Joyce Road in the Inanda Road area in Newlands.

Upon arrival at the premises, the stolen vehicle was located parked inside the property. Further inspection revealed that several vehicles had their number plates removed, and checks conducted confirmed that the vehicles were reported stolen from various areas in the north of Durban, including Verulam and Ballito.

Stolen Vehicles and Parts Recovered

A total of five stolen vehicles, including Toyota Fortuners, were recovered from the property. In addition to the vehicles, numerous vehicle parts, including Toyota spares, were discovered scattered across the property, indicating that the premises was being used as a vehicle stripping operation.

The following vehicles and parts were recovered:

  • 5 stolen vehicles, including Toyota Fortuners
  • Multiple vehicle parts, including Toyota spares
  • Number plates removed from several vehicles

As noted on the South African Police Service website, vehicle theft is a serious concern in South Africa, with many cases going unreported. The recovery of these stolen vehicles and parts is a significant step in the fight against organised vehicle crime.

The discovery highlights the growing cooperation between private security companies, tracking agencies, and law enforcement, which continues to play a vital role in combating organised vehicle crime. As explained on the Wikipedia page on automotive theft, vehicle theft is a complex issue that requires a multi-faceted approach to prevent and investigate.</p)
