In a heartfelt gesture, over 300 school shoes were donated to restore dignity to learners at Nieuwoudt Primary School in memory of Jerobejin van Wyk, a 13-year-old who was murdered in 2022 for stealing mangoes.

According to Wendy Pekeur, Founder and Coordinator of Ubuntu Rural Women and Youth Movement, the donation was made possible with the help of the organisation “Samantha’s Feet”. Pekeur shared that she often thought about Jerobejin, who was killed by farmer Daniel Smit, and wanted to make a difference in the lives of his former classmates.

Restoring Dignity

The donation of school shoes is aimed at restoring dignity to learners who often face bullying due to not having the proper uniform or shoes. Pekeur, who had a similar experience as a child, understands the importance of having the right attire. She recalls how her late grandmother bought her a pair of school shoes and a school dress, which gave her the confidence to finish her matric.

Pekeur explained that she applied to several schools, including Doringbay Primary on the West Coast, and was granted the request. She received a call from Henriette from Samaritan’s Feet, and they donated shoes to over 300 learners. Pekeur believes that a simple gesture like this can change a child’s life and is grateful for the opportunity to make a difference.

The Impact of Donations

The donation of school shoes is not only a kind gesture but also a way to honour Jerobejin’s memory. It shows that his life mattered and that his community cares about the well-being of its children. As UNICEF states, education is a fundamental right, and every child deserves to have access to quality education, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Some of the benefits of donations like these include:

  • Restoring dignity to learners who face bullying due to not having the proper uniform or shoes
  • Providing an opportunity for children to focus on their education without the burden of not having the right attire
  • Showing the community that they care about the well-being of its children

The handover of the school shoes was a rewarding experience for Pekeur, who believes that making a difference in the lives of others is a powerful way to create positive change.
