Wild Horse Crash Survivor Demands Road Safety Measures on R43

A devastating collision between a car and a wild horse on the R43 has left a young man shaken and advocating for road safety measures to be implemented. Lourens Lourens, 24, was driving his Opel Corsa, ‘Minki’, with his friend Jaden Wildschut, also 24, when they slammed into the animal, which had wandered onto the road.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday last week, has raised concerns among Western Cape traffic authorities about the presence of cattle on public roads. According to Western Cape Government officials, several accidents have been reported in the area, highlighting the need for urgent action to prevent such incidents.

Call for Warning Signs

Lourens, who suffered severe bruising and was hospitalized along with his friend, is now campaigning for warning signs to be erected along the stretch of road where the accident occurred. ‘I do not want this happening to anyone else,’ he said, emphasizing the importance of taking preventative measures to ensure road safety.

Lourens’ father, also Lourens Lourens, expressed concern about the incident and has been in touch with CapeNature, the Western Cape government’s conservation authority, to determine the origin of the wild horse and to discuss possible solutions to the problem.

Consequences of the Accident

The accident has had significant consequences for Lourens, who will have to sell his car, which is not yet paid off, for a fraction of its value. He also suffered injuries, including severe bruising, and his friend had to undergo treatment to remove glass from her eyes.

Some of the key concerns and demands raised by Lourens and his family include:

  • Implementation of road safety measures, such as warning signs, to prevent similar accidents
  • Removal of wild animals from the area to minimize the risk of collisions
  • Increased awareness about the presence of cattle on public roads and the need for caution when driving in such areas

The incident highlights the importance of addressing the issue of wild animals on public roads and the need for collaborative efforts between authorities, conservation organizations, and local communities to prevent such accidents and ensure road safety.
