What Are Rip Currents?
Rip currents are powerful channels of water that flow away from the shore and out to sea. They can be deadly, especially for inexperienced swimmers who may not know how to escape them. According to the Wikipedia page on rip currents, the best way to survive a rip current is to remain calm and swim parallel to the shore, rather than trying to swim against the current.
Here are some tips for staying safe at the beach:
- Always swim at a lifeguarded beach
- Check the weather and surf conditions before entering the water
- Learn how to identify and escape a rip current
- Swim with a buddy and stay within your depth
- Follow the instructions of lifeguards and other beach safety officials
The incident at Bloubergstrand Beach is a tragic reminder of the importance of beach safety and the need for swimmers to be aware of the dangers of rip currents.
