Phoenix Hijacking: Child Witnesses Gunpoint Theft

A harrowing hijacking incident unfolded in Whetstone, Phoenix, on Saturday, with a child witness recounting the traumatic events to his mother, saying ‘Mummy, he got a gun.’ The Toyota Cross was later recovered in KwaMashu N Section after a viral video of the armed men driving off in the vehicle spread on social media.

The footage showed visitors cowering on the floor outside a relative’s driveway gate as one suspect reversed the Toyota Corolla. Two accomplices, wearing face masks, ran around before entering the hijacked vehicle. A hijacker in the passenger seat brandished a firearm before they drove off.

Hijacking Incident and Recovery

According to KZN VIP Protection Services, their response units were immediately alerted following multiple reports of a hijacking in progress involving four armed suspects. The suspects allegedly confronted a family, forcefully removed them from their Toyota Cross, and fled the scene with the vehicle.

Through swift action and effective collaboration, the hijacked vehicle was successfully recovered in the KwaMashu N Section area shortly thereafter. Members of the South African Police Service were summoned to the scene, and the recovered vehicle was safely transported to the police station for further investigation and processing.

Community Response and Vigilance

KZN VIP commended the outstanding teamwork and rapid response demonstrated by all involved, including Magma Security and community police forum members, as well as supporting stakeholders. The company urged the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.

Medics assessed the victims, who were traumatised but escaped unharmed. The incident highlights the importance of community awareness and cooperation in preventing and responding to crime.
