Ramaphosa Extends Madlanga Commission Deadline to August 31

President Cyril Ramaphosa has granted the Madlanga Commission an extension until August 31, 2026, to complete its investigation into alleged political interference and infiltration of the police and judiciary.

The commission, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, was initially expected to submit its final report by March 17. However, due to the large number of witnesses still scheduled to testify, the deadline has been pushed back.

Key Witnesses and Testimonies

The inquiry has already heard testimonies from several senior police officers, municipal officials, and political figures, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Major-General Lesetja Senona.

Witnesses have alleged coordinated efforts to manipulate criminal investigations, shield politically connected individuals, and weaken the rule of law. The commission has also warned that its investigation has uncovered issues requiring urgent action.

Interim Reports and Recommendations

The commission submitted its first interim report on December 17, 2025, which referred several matters for immediate criminal investigation and called for urgent decisions on possible prosecutions.

The report also raised concerns about the employment status of certain officials and recommended suspensions in some cases. A second interim report is expected to be submitted by May 29, 2026.

The Madlanga Commission’s investigation is part of a broader effort to address corruption and governance failures in South Africa. As noted on Wikipedia, commissions of inquiry have been used to investigate various issues, including corruption and state capture.

  • The commission’s findings and recommendations will be closely watched by the public and civil society organizations.
  • The extension of the deadline will allow the commission to complete its work thoroughly and ensure that all relevant witnesses are heard.
  • The final report is expected to provide a comprehensive account of the alleged political interference and infiltration of the police and judiciary.
