A dramatic shootout at the Ntuzuma police station in KwaZulu-Natal has left one person dead and two police officers injured. The incident occurred on Monday when a 22-year-old attempted murder suspect, who was arrested on Saturday, overpowered two police officers and disarmed them.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the suspect managed to grab a firearm from one of the officers and started shooting, holding the officers hostage in the cells. The situation was brought under control after tactical police teams intervened, and the suspect was shot and fatally wounded.
Hostage Situation and Police Response
The hostage situation lasted for several minutes, during which time the suspect continued to fire shots. Police officers who were held hostage will undergo psychological debriefing sessions, said Netshiunda. Two police officers, a male and female, sustained minor injuries during the scuffle.
ALS paramedic services spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said that paramedics responded to calls for medical assistance at the Ntuzuma Police Station just after 08:30 on Monday. Initial reports indicated that a suspect had disarmed a police official and opened fire on the building. Paramedics from multiple ambulance services proceeded to the scene, and after it was neutralized by police, they were allowed to enter.
Injuries and Investigation
Paramedics found that the suspect had sustained fatal injuries as a result of the shootout with the police. Six others, including police officials, were assessed for injuries, and one person was transported to hospital for minor injuries. The area has been cordoned off while police investigate the incident, said Jamieson.
The South African Police Service has launched an investigation into the incident. The suspect’s identity has not been released, and the motive behind the attack is still unclear. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of police stations and the measures in place to prevent such incidents.
