Durban Homeless Shelter Revamp: 50% Capacity Boost

eThekwini Municipality officials are making significant strides in combating homelessness through renovations at the Sakhithemba Shelter, which aims to increase its capacity by 50% to accommodate more of Durban’s homeless population. The move comes amidst growing concerns from local businesses about drug-related issues in the area, which have been affecting trade and investment.

According to the Wikipedia page on homelessness, South Africa has one of the highest rates of homelessness in the world, with many people struggling to access basic services such as housing, healthcare, and sanitation. The Sakhithemba Shelter, which is one of the largest in the city, provides a safe haven for those in need, offering food, clothing, and counseling services.

Renovations and Upgrades

The renovations at the Sakhithemba Shelter are expected to cost around R5 million and will include the construction of new dormitories, kitchens, and bathrooms. The shelter will also be equipped with new security systems and facilities for people with disabilities. The upgrades are expected to be completed within the next 6 months, and will increase the shelter’s capacity from 200 to 300 people.

Impact on the Community

The renovations are expected to have a positive impact on the local community, with many businesses and residents welcoming the move. A local business owner, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the shelter’s presence has been a concern for many traders in the area, but the renovations are a step in the right direction. The business owner said that the increased capacity and improved facilities will help to reduce the number of people on the streets, which will in turn reduce crime and improve trade.

Some of the key features of the renovated shelter will include:

  • New dormitories with beds and lockers for each resident
  • Improved kitchen and dining facilities
  • Upgraded bathroom facilities with hot water and sanitation
  • New security systems, including CCTV cameras and alarm systems
  • Facilities for people with disabilities, including wheelchair ramps and accessible toilets

The eThekwini Municipality has also partnered with local organizations, such as the South African National Parks agency, to provide job training and placement services for residents of the shelter. The partnership aims to help people gain the skills and experience they need to secure employment and become self-sufficient.
