Gqeberha Rapist Gets 4 Life Terms

A 42-year-old man, Thulani Kondile, has been sentenced to four life terms for rape and an additional five years for kidnapping in the Gqeberha Regional Court. Kondile, already serving a life sentence for a previous rape conviction, was found guilty of abducting and sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman in 2019.

The horrifying crime occurred in August 2019 when the victim boarded a taxi in Kwadwesi to purchase electricity. After dropping off other passengers, Kondile deviated from the route and drove the victim to bushes near St George’s Beach, where he repeatedly raped her.

Rape and Kidnapping Conviction

Through dedicated investigative work, the suspect, who was initially unknown, was positively identified, traced, and arrested in Peddie in March 2021, according to the South African Police Service (SAPS). The SAPS reaffirmed its commitment to combating gender-based violence (GBV) and ensuring that perpetrators of such heinous crimes are removed from society.

Bail was successfully opposed, and the accused remained in custody until the finalisation of the case. The sentence handed down to Kondile is a significant step towards justice for the victim and her family.

Combating Gender-Based Violence

The SAPS remains committed to combating GBV and ensuring that perpetrators of such heinous crimes are brought to justice. Some of the ways to combat GBV include:

  • Increasing awareness and education about GBV
  • Improving support services for victims of GBV
  • Enhancing the effectiveness of the justice system in dealing with GBV cases

By working together, we can create a safer and more just society for all. For more information on GBV and how to report incidents, visit the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development website.
