Gert-Johan Coetzee, known as the ‘King of Couture’, has undergone a life-changing 12-hour brain surgery to remove a rare benign tumor that was pressing against his brain stem.

The tumor was discovered after Coetzee noticed troubling symptoms like hearing loss, imbalance, and blurred vision. Led by neurosurgeon Professor Christos Profyris, the complex surgery successfully removed about 95% of the tumor at Netcare Milpark Hospital.

Recovery and Reflection

While Coetzee is currently experiencing temporary facial paralysis, doctors expect a full recovery in the coming months. Taking to social media, Coetzee shared a candid and introspective statement about his recovery, expressing gratitude for the exceptional care and support he received.

‘Over the past few weeks, I have taken some time away from my usual schedule to focus on my health and wellbeing,’ he wrote. ‘This period has offered a moment for rest and reflection, and I am deeply grateful for the exceptional care and support I have received.’

A New Perspective

In a recent interview, Coetzee shared how the experience changed his perspective. ‘The time away from work has given me the unexpected gift of inner reflection. Moments like this remind you very quickly what matters in life.’ Coetzee added, ‘What surprised me most was discovering how calm I felt once the reality of the situation set in. I quickly realised that fear doesn’t help you move forward.’

According to the Mayo Clinic, benign brain tumors can be treated with surgery, and in some cases, radiation therapy. Coetzee’s experience highlights the importance of seeking medical attention if symptoms persist.

As Coetzee prepares for an exciting season ahead, his fans and supporters wish him a speedy recovery. With his studio continuing to work on new creations, Coetzee looks forward to sharing what they have been creating with the public.
