The Bahá’í Faith, founded by Bahá’u’lláh, emphasizes the importance of contributing to an ever-advancing civilisation, where humanity works together to build a peaceful and prosperous world. This concept is rooted in the idea that all people have been created to carry forward an ever-advancing civilisation, as stated by Bahá’u’lláh. In such a society, the well-being and welfare of everyone would be considered a priority, and there would be a high regard for the rights and dignity of every individual and group.
According to the Bahá’í International Community, the earth’s peoples yearn for an end to conflict and suffering, and it is essential to seize upon these rising impulses for change and channel them into overcoming the remaining barriers that block the realization of global peace. The Bahá’í International Community’s statement, ‘The Prosperity of Humankind’, highlights the need for a vision of human prosperity that includes the spiritual and material well-being of all people.
Unity and Diversity
In an ever-advancing civilisation, the differences in the human family are considered beautifying factors, rather than factors that pit groups against one another. This is because the differences in the human family make our world a beautiful and colourful place in which to live. As Bahá’u’lláh says, civilisation has evolved to the point where the unity of humanity has become of paramount necessity, and it is essential to lay the groundwork for a united world with laws and institutions that are universal in both character and authority.
Humanity’s Collective Maturity
Humanity has passed through various stages of development and is now at the threshold of its collective maturity. What was relevant and applicable in the previous stages of the development of humanity would not necessarily meet its current requirements. The Bahá’í Writings state that ‘Man must now become imbued with new virtues and powers, new moral standards, new capacities…The gifts and blessings of the period of youth, although timely and sufficient during the adolescence of mankind, are now incapable of meeting the requirements of its maturity’.
To achieve this collective maturity, it is essential to recognize the importance of unity and cooperation. The following are some key principles that can guide us towards building an ever-advancing civilisation:
- Recognizing the oneness of humanity and the interconnectedness of all people
- Embracing diversity and promoting unity in diversity
- Fostering a sense of global citizenship and shared responsibility
- Promoting education, justice, and equality for all
By working together and embracing these principles, we can create a brighter future for all humanity and contribute to an ever-advancing civilisation. As the Bahá’í International Community notes, the well-being of mankind, its peace and security, are unattainable unless and until its unity is achieved.
