Sibusiso Dyonase, the Sedibeng District Municipality Democratic Alliance (DA) Caucus Leader, believes he has a chance to lead the party in the upcoming federal leadership race. The party’s federal congress is set to take place on April 11 and 12, 2026, and Dyonase is confident that he can make a difference.
Dyonase’s announcement comes after federal leader John Steenhuisen’s decision not to seek re-election, and Helen Zille’s decision to step down as chair of the DA’s Federal Council. Speaking on SABC’s Face of the Nation, Dyonase said he entered the race to give delegates a genuine choice in electing the party’s next leader.
Leadership Experience
Dyonase argued that leadership is not solely about tenure, but about skills, input, and adaptability. He highlighted his extensive experience on the ground in communities, having communicated with ground forces since his start in the Democratic Alliance 15 years ago. As a public representative, Dyonase believes that connecting with communities is crucial, and he has made sure to nurture the ground force to pass the DA’s message.
On regional support, Dyonase said that while he has backing from members, collective positions are not determined before the congress. He emphasized that delegates go to the congress as individuals to elect a leader that they resonate with.
Strategic Leadership
Dyonase addressed the DA’s role in the Government of National Unity (GNU), saying that strategic leadership would be essential. He recognized the importance of the GNU and its benefits to South Africa, and he believes that the DA must lead the party through the GNU. Dyonase outlined strategies to grow the party beyond its traditional base, emphasizing the importance of equipping public representatives with the necessary skills. He believes that this can be achieved by:
- Providing training and development programs for public representatives
- Encouraging community engagement and outreach
- Fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity within the party
Dyonase’s vision for the DA is one of growth, inclusivity, and community engagement. As the party prepares for its federal congress, Dyonase remains confident that he can lead the DA to success.
