A team of doctors in Limpopo has made history by successfully separating conjoined twin boys in a complex seven-hour surgical procedure. The twins, born on January 28 at Mankweng Hospital outside Polokwane, were joined at the abdomen and shared certain organs, making the surgery highly complex.
The operation, led by Professor Nyaweleni Tshifularo, began at 7:45am and concluded at 3:10pm. Tshifularo said the procedure was a great achievement for the province, the country, and his team, including specialist nurses.
Historic Breakthrough for Limpopo
Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba described the operation as a historic achievement for the province’s healthcare system. She praised staff at both Maphutha Malatjie Hospital and Mankweng Hospital for their swift and effective response. According to the National Department of Health, the successful operation demonstrates the growing capability of rural healthcare facilities.
The twins were born to a 29-year-old woman and were referred from Maphutha Malatjie Hospital in Namakgale. Medical staff there identified the condition during labour and arranged an urgent transfer. The twins are currently in a stable condition following the surgery and have been transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit.
