South African designer Andile Cele, popularly known as ‘Scotchisdope’, is set to make history as the first South African designer to showcase at Colombo Fashion Week in Sri Lanka.
Cele’s journey into fashion was shaped by his love for basketball and Michael Jordan, which eventually led to the creation of his brand, DOPE.
From Humble Beginnings to Global Stage
“My love for fashion started with my love for basketball and Michael Jordan,” Cele explains. “I fell in love with Nike Jordans, and that grew into an appreciation for the clothes we wore off the court. That sparked something in me to create pieces that reflect that lifestyle.”
DOPE has grown into more than just a clothing brand, with Cele opening his first concept store on Fox Street in the Johannesburg CBD, which blends streetwear with local and international fashion.
African Narrative Inspires Colombo Collection
Cele’s collection for Colombo Fashion Week is inspired by a bold African narrative, centered around an African tennis champion. “The collection expands on the story of DOPE, telling that story through fashion, what this champion wears on and off the court. The colours, fabrics, and prints all reflect that journey.”
As he prepares to take to the runway, Cele is looking forward to more than just showcasing garments. “I’m excited to see how the audience connects with my vision, from the clothes to the music and visuals we’ve carefully put together. I’m also looking forward to building business relationships and exploring opportunities with retailers and wholesalers.”
