A Florida man was executed by lethal injection on Tuesday for the rape and murder of a 21-year-old mother of two young children. Michael King, 54, was sentenced to death in 2009 for the killing of Denise Lee, who was abducted from her home in North Port. Lee’s sons were two years old and six months old at the time of her kidnapping and were unharmed.
Capital Punishment in the US
The execution of Michael King is the seventh to be carried out in the United States this year, with four taking place in Florida, two in Texas, and one in Oklahoma. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, there were 47 executions in the United States last year, the most since 2009, when 52 people were put to death.
Florida carried out the most executions in 2025, with 19, followed by Alabama, South Carolina, and Texas, where there were five each. Thirty-nine of last year’s executions were carried out by lethal injection, while three were by firing squad and five by nitrogen hypoxia, a method that involves pumping nitrogen gas into a face mask, causing the prisoner to suffocate.
Controversy Surrounding Capital Punishment
The use of nitrogen gas as a method of capital punishment has been denounced by United Nations experts as cruel and inhumane. The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 US states, while three others – California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania – have moratoriums in place.
The debate surrounding capital punishment is ongoing, with some arguing that it is a necessary measure for the most heinous crimes, while others believe that it is a violation of human rights. As the US continues to grapple with this issue, it remains to be seen how the use of capital punishment will evolve in the future.
In South Africa, the death penalty was abolished in 1995, and the country has since become a vocal advocate for the abolition of capital punishment worldwide. As the international community continues to debate this issue, it is likely that the use of capital punishment in the US will remain a topic of discussion and controversy.
