Cape Town Pedestrian Footways Boost Safety

The City of Cape Town has embarked on a significant project to construct new pedestrian footways across several northern suburbs, aiming to improve safety and accessibility for residents. Led by the City’s Urban Mobility Directorate, the initiative is currently underway in Bellville, Uitzicht, Eversdal, and Peerless Park West in Kraaifontein.

According to Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, the upgrades are designed to make walking safer and more accessible for communities. “The construction of new pedestrian footways involves preparing the road sites, strengthening the ground, installing new edges and kerbs, improving drainage, and finally laying the footpaths,” Quintas explained.

Pedestrian Safety Enhancements

The project, which is expected to continue until April 29, weather permitting, will affect several specific road sections, including Riesling Street between Kanonberg Boulevard and Pontac Street in Oude Westhof, Vatican Street between Athens Street and Okavango Road in Uitzicht, Sondal Road and Kendal Road in Eversdal, and Raan Street between Frans Conradie Drive and Horak Street in Peerless Park West.

The City has urged pedestrians and motorists to remain cautious while work is in progress. Road users are advised to slow down, obey signage, and be aware of uneven surfaces, construction workers, and increased pedestrian movement near the sites. Benefits for Residents

The construction of new pedestrian footways will not only enhance safety but also encourage more people to choose active ways of getting around. This initiative forms part of the City’s broader efforts to promote safer, more walkable neighbourhoods and improve everyday mobility for residents. Some of the benefits of this project include:

  • Improved safety for pedestrians, particularly children and the elderly
  • Enhanced accessibility for residents with disabilities
  • Increased opportunities for physical activity and recreation
  • Reduced traffic congestion and air pollution

The City of Cape Town is committed to creating a more sustainable and livable city, and this project is a significant step towards achieving that goal. As noted by the United Nations, investing in pedestrian infrastructure is essential for creating vibrant and inclusive cities.
