JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng — In a strategic move to solidify its position ahead of the 2026 local government elections, ActionSA has officially signed a pre-election pact with two smaller, emerging political parties.
The announcement, made on Monday, January 26, 2026, marks the latest expansion of Herman Mashaba’s “Green Umbrella” initiative—a project aimed at consolidating smaller political entities to challenge the ANC and DA duopoly in key metros.
The “Green Umbrella” Strategy
ActionSA has been vocal about its intent to act as a “constructive opposition” that bridges the gap between major parties. By bringing smaller parties into its fold, ActionSA aims to:
- Pool Resources: Combining campaign efforts and grassroots networks in regions where ActionSA traditionally has a smaller footprint.
- Unified Front: Ensuring that the “anti-establishment” and “pro-service delivery” vote is not fragmented among dozens of micro-parties on the ballot.
- Metro Focus: The pact is specifically designed to target strategic municipalities where the ANC’s majority is most vulnerable.
Building on 2025 Momentum
This new pact follows a successful 2025 for ActionSA, which saw the party integrate 39 new councillors from other organizations into its ranks.
- National Reach: While the party’s base remains strong in Gauteng, Mashaba has emphasized that the 2026 campaign will focus heavily on attracting young, black voters in provinces outside urban centers.
- Policy Pillars: The partners in the pact have reportedly agreed to align with ActionSA’s core values, including the rule of law, ethical leadership, and the proposed replacement of B-BBEE with a more inclusive “Opportunity Fund.”
Coalition Lessons Learned
During the signing, ActionSA leadership reiterated their skepticism of the current Government of National Unity (GNU) model.
“Our relationships will be governed by legally binding coalition agreements,” Mashaba noted. “We are building a family of parties that are committed to real accountability, not just political convenience.”
The Road to 2026
With the local government elections approaching, ActionSA’s latest alliance signals that the party is moving from a regional Gauteng-based entity to a more complex, multi-party coalition leader. The two “little-known” parties involved in the pact are expected to bring localized support in specific wards, particularly in areas neglected by traditional service delivery.
As more parties join the “Green Umbrella,” the 2026 electoral landscape is becoming increasingly polarized between the large established blocs and this new, consolidated “Third Way” led by ActionSA.
