A dramatic shootout in northern KwaZulu-Natal has resulted in the deaths of five suspected rhino poachers, in a significant blow to armed poaching syndicates in the region. The incident occurred on Saturday evening, when a group of suspects engaged in a gun battle with police at a roadblock set up along the R618, near the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park.
According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the police had gathered intelligence on the movements of the suspects, who were allegedly travelling to a game reserve to carry out a poaching operation. A stop and search operation was set up along the same road, and when the suspects arrived at the roadblock, a shootout ensued between the police and the suspects.

Ezemvelo’s chief executive officer Sihle Mkhize commended the professionalism and bravery displayed by members of the SAPS and Ezemvelo during the operation, stating that the individuals killed were allegedly engaged in illegal activities that pose a serious threat not only to the province’s wildlife heritage, but also to the safety of field staff, communities and visitors. Mkhize also noted that since the start of the year, 13 rhinos were poached in KZN, which was regarded as a major success when compared to the 139 rhinos poached at the same time in 2024 and 33 in 2025.
