Zuma Demands Answers on 2024 Election Glitches

The Umkhonto weSizwe Party, led by Jacob Zuma, is still seeking answers from the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) regarding the ‘glitches’ that occurred during the 2024 election results, which the party believes compromised the integrity of the electoral process. The IEC has refused to entertain the party’s demands, stating that the matter is sub judice and currently before the country’s courts.

The party’s concerns stem from the ‘optimisation’ of the results, which led to a two-hour blackout of the elections results board during the 2024 elections. The MKP is demanding to know who authorised this ‘optimisation’ and what safeguards will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in future elections. According to the Electoral Commission of South Africa, the matter is scheduled to be heard in the Electoral Court on June 18.

IEC’s Response

The IEC’s national spokesperson, Kate Bapela, stated that the commission would not discuss the matter while it is still in court. This has led to further concerns from the MKP, which is questioning the IEC’s ability to conduct another election while the party is still challenging the validity of the last election results.

Impact on Upcoming Elections

The MKP’s leader, Jacob Zuma, has expressed concerns that the upcoming local government elections, scheduled for November 4, may be compromised by the lack of transparency and accountability from the IEC. The party is considering calling for the postponement of the elections until the disputed 2024 general election case has been finalised.

Some of the key concerns raised by the MKP include:

  • The ‘downtime episode’ during the 2024 elections, which raises serious concerns about the integrity of the IEC
  • Reports of dumped ballot papers, which further erode public confidence in the electoral process
  • The lack of transparency and accountability from the IEC, which may compromise the credibility of the upcoming elections

The MKP is demanding full accountability from the IEC and clear answers on the ‘glitches’ that occurred during the 2024 election results. The party believes that without transparency and accountability, the credibility of the upcoming elections remains in serious doubt.</p)
