Durban City Wins Nedbank Cup: 2-1 Victory Over TS Galaxy

Durban City has made history by winning the Nedbank Cup with a 2-1 victory over TS Galaxy on Saturday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. This marks the first time in 17 years that the trophy will be going home to KwaZulu-Natal.

The game started off with Durban City imposing themselves on the opening minutes, forcing Galaxy into their defences early on. The Durban boys looked confident attacking inside the Galaxy half, winning numerous corners inside 10 minutes. Jean Lwamba had the first shot at goal with an aggressive header that went just over the crossbar.

Nedbank Cup Final Highlights

City continued to hold possession but Galaxy kept making counter moves through Durban mistakes. Galaxy failed to convert their opportunity in the 25th minute after Letsoalo sent it flying over the bar. The game turned scrappy at the half hour mark, with the wet surface making it difficult for clean first touches.

Galaxy got lucky from a setpiece after Lwamba scored an own goal while trying to clear the corner just before the half time whistle. However, Durban came out a different team in the second 45, likely after the tongue lashing coach Pitso Dladla gave them. Centre back Mfanafuthi Mkhize put the game back on level terms in the 58th minute to bring Durban hopes back.

Turnaround in the Second Half

Lwamba put the Blue Marines in the lead with the outside of his right boot on the 70th minute to complete a 180 on their final start. City’s construction of passes and build in the second half clearly the superior of the two, with the second goal confirming their dominance on the game. City just held on to possession after their second goal as Galaxy chased the game down unsuccessfully.

Kyle Jurgens and Brooklyn Poggenpoel held the midfield with incredible composure against Galaxy, in the second half especially.
