A shooting incident in Durban’s Overport area has left one suspect dead and another injured, according to a video posted on social media by anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee. The incident, which occurred on Crescent and East streets, has sparked widespread concern among residents and calls for increased police intervention in the area.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the police are investigating the shooting, but details are still sketchy. The video, which has gone viral, shows a barrage of bullets being fired, with pedestrians running for cover.
Overport Ratepayers Association Calls for Action
The Overport Ratepayers Association has called for urgent police intervention to address the escalating crime in the area. Chair Abdool Valodia expressed deep concern and disappointment at the shooting, stating that public spaces should be safe for families and residents.
“This incident is totally unacceptable. A public park should be a safe space for families, children and residents to enjoy, not a site of violence and criminal activity,” Valodia said. He added that residents are tired of living with escalating violence, including gang-related activities and drug dealing that threaten daily life.
Demands for Police Intervention
The association has called on the authorities, including the South African Police Service, community policing forums, and the eThekwini municipality, to take immediate action to restore law and order in the area. Some of the demands include:
- Increased police presence in the area
- Improved street lighting and security cameras
- Community engagement and outreach programs to address social issues

The association is ready to work with law enforcement agencies and local government to address the challenges, but emphasized that it cannot accept the status quo of escalating violence and disorder.
