A 42-year-old man from Slovo Park near Phuthaditjhaba in Qwaqwa has been arrested after allegedly confessing to the murder of his girlfriend and handing himself over to police. The suspect presented himself at a local police station on Tuesday, where he reported that he had allegedly killed his 38-year-old girlfriend on Sunday.

Domestic Dispute Turns Deadly

According to the South African Police Service in the Free State, police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said officers acted swiftly following the report. Police subsequently proceeded to the suspect’s residence to verify the report, where they discovered the lifeless body of the woman, who had sustained multiple bruises to the face.

Emergency medical personnel declared the victim dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest the incident may have stemmed from a domestic dispute. The couple allegedly had an argument over infidelity, which escalated into a physical altercation, as noted on the South African Police Service website.

Call to Action Against Abuse

The suspect was immediately arrested and remains in police custody. He is expected to appear before the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, where he will face a charge of murder. Police have reiterated their call for communities to take a stand against abuse, as stated by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.

The South African Police Service continues to urge communities to speak out against domestic violence and gender-based violence. Together, we must protect one another and break the silence surrounding abuse. Some of the warning signs of domestic violence include:

  • Physical abuse, such as hitting or pushing
  • Emotional abuse, such as name-calling or put-downs
  • Financial abuse, such as controlling access to money

It is essential to recognize these signs and seek help if you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence.
