Gauteng Mother Killed by Abusive Partner

A Gauteng mother, Chilkana Baktawer, 44, was shot dead in front of her two young daughters, aged 10 and 7, in her home in Valhalla, Centurion, last week. The suspect, Kesavan Pillay, was arrested and charged with murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

According to a close friend, Baktawer had been a victim of abuse for over a decade and had recently escaped from her allegedly abusive partner. The friend said that Baktawer had shared with her the alleged abuse she endured, including an incident where she was found sitting in a graveyard with a purple and black face, pleading for help.

Abuse and Escapade

Baktawer had taken her daughters and left their home in Laudium to live at a property owned by her father in Valhalla, around five months ago. However, the home was petrol-bombed, destroying all their belongings, and Baktawer was forced to go into hiding, staying at different hotels or family homes.

The friend described Baktawer as having a “beautiful soul” and being a devoted mother to her daughters. She said that Baktawer was always willing to listen and help others, despite dealing with her own problems. The friend demanded justice for Baktawer and her daughters, who witnessed their mother being killed.

Investigation and Charges

Captain Johan van Dyk, spokesperson for the Tshwane District SAPS, said that the suspect allegedly gained entry into the house by jumping over a fence. The matter was adjourned for further investigation, and the suspect is expected to appear in court again soon.

According to the South African Police Service, domestic violence is a serious issue in South Africa, and victims can report incidents to the police or seek help from organizations such as the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.

Some of the warning signs of domestic violence include:

  • Physical abuse, such as hitting or pushing
  • Emotional abuse, such as name-calling or belittling
  • Financial abuse, such as controlling access to money
  • Isolation from friends and family

It is essential for victims of domestic violence to seek help and support from trusted individuals, organizations, or authorities.
