The family of 19-year-old Reece Oliphant is pleading for justice after he was tragically caught in the crossfire during a mass shooting that claimed two lives in Westbury earlier this month. Two suspects made their second appearance at the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Thursday, with the case postponed to 2 April for further bail applications.
The pair is facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm. Authorities confirmed that five people, including a 15-month-old baby, were shot during the attack at the corner of Lark Spur Court and Jacaranda Court. Victims were reportedly in the area when an unknown number of suspects opened fire.

An adult woman was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, while another victim later died from their injuries. All five sustained gunshot wounds. Speaking about the loss of her son, Reece’s mother, Roxanne Carrim, said the family is struggling to cope. “Now we have to go through another week of trauma and wandering, just to come back next week again. It’s scary, it’s frustrating that we have to relive this over and over. Every day becomes harder. We are not coping,” she said.
Carrim added that seeing the people responsible for her son’s death in court has been especially painful. “It’s a whole week of trauma for us again, as a family. I understand that they’ve been arrested before for similar crimes. They are now applying for bail again for something as serious as this. For our family, for other families, it’s terrifying, little boys at home now have to stay indoors.” According to the South African Police Service, gun violence is a growing concern in the country.
Impact on the Community
Mikhail Oliphant, Reece’s father, had opened up about the wider issue of crime in Westbury and the growing prevalence of gun violence when the news broke. “When they start shooting, it’s like they say, ‘we have to kill someone’. Even though we don’t get the person we are looking for, whoever we find, we are going to kill that person. So that is ultimately what transpired yesterday,” he said. The community is calling for increased efforts to address the root causes of gun violence and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Some of the measures that can be taken to address gun violence include:
- Increasing police presence in high-crime areas
- Implementing community-based programs to address poverty and unemployment
- Providing support for victims of gun violence and their families
The Oliphant family hopes that the legal system will finally deliver justice for Reece, as they continue to navigate their grief and the trauma of the ongoing court process. For more information on gun violence and its impact on communities, visit the Wikipedia page on gun violence.
