Senegal Slams CAF Over AFCON Scam: 2025 Title Dispute

Senegal football boss Abdoulaye Fall has labelled the decision to strip the country of its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title the “most blatant administrative scam in the history of our sport”. The controversy began when several Senegal players walked off the pitch in protest at a penalty awarded to hosts Morocco, shortly after the west Africans had a goal disallowed. Despite the drama, Senegal went on to win 1-0 in extra-time courtesy of a Pape Gueye goal.

African Football Integrity at Stake

The Senegalese football federation (FSF) has lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to overturn the result of the AFCON final. According to Juan de Dios Crespo-Perez, one of the Federation’s lawyers and a specialist in sports law and the CAS, “it is not only the integrity of African football but the integrity of the world of football that will be judged before the CAS”. For more information on the CAS and its role in resolving sports disputes, visit the official CAS website.

The FSF has appointed a team of lawyers to defend Senegal’s “honour” before the CAS. Seydou Diagne, who heads up the team of lawyers, argued that stripping Senegal of their title would amount to “calling into question the referee’s decision and brazenly violating Laws 5 and 6 of the game”, which pertain to the referee and other match officials. Diagne warned that if the CAS allows the CAF’s decision to stand, it could have far-reaching consequences for the sport, with teams potentially turning to lawyers rather than playing the game to resolve disputes.

Proceedings and Potential Outcomes

A third lawyer, Serge Vittoz of Switzerland, explained that proceedings before the Lausanne-based CAS usually last between nine and 12 months. However, the FSF is seeking an expedited procedure, which could result in a decision within two months if all parties agree. The Senegalese government has also called for an investigation into allegations of corruption within CAF, with French lawyer Pierre-Olivier Sur tasked with carrying out the necessary investigations.

Some of the key points in the Senegalese appeal include:

  • The CAF’s decision to overturn the result of the AFCON final is unjust and violates the principles of fair play.
  • The referee’s decision to award a penalty to Morocco was incorrect and should be overturned.
  • The FSF has the right to defend its honour and the integrity of the sport before the CAS.

The outcome of the appeal is uncertain, but one thing is clear: the integrity of African football is at stake. As the CAS considers the case, fans and teams alike will be watching with bated breath to see how this dramatic saga unfolds.
