South Africa has seen a significant shift in marriage and divorce trends, with the latest report from Statistics South Africa revealing that more women than men are initiating divorces. In 2024, women accounted for 57.2% of all divorces, with the majority of these cases involving women in their 40s.

According to the report, the steady decline in marriages and unions since 2015, coupled with the rise in divorces initiated by women, tells a story of social change. Statistics South Africa notes that fewer people are getting married, and those who do are doing so later in life. Additionally, more women are exercising their freedom to choose relationship outcomes that best serve their well-being.

Divorce Trends in South Africa

The data shows that women-led divorce cases are distributed unevenly across the provinces, with Gauteng accounting for the largest share, followed by the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. A closer look at marital history reveals that most of the women filing for divorce were experiencing the end of their first marriage and were generally employed, often in professional, semi-professional, and technical occupations.

Age remains a significant factor in the profile of women initiating divorce, with 70.7% of women who filed for divorce being younger than their husbands. The majority of these women are between 40 and 44 years old, with those aged 35 to 39 accounting for 19.7% of marriages ending. Only 0.5% of divorces involved women younger than 25.

Marriage Duration and Divorce

Marriage duration offers another perspective on the stability of relationships. The report notes that divorces dropped during the COVID-19 period, with sharp declines in 2020 and 2021, but have since rebounded, rising again from 2022 onwards. The largest share of divorces, at 26.7%, occurred in marriages that had lasted between five and nine years, followed by marriages of 10 to 14 years at 21.3%.
