A severe storm lashed parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Friday night, causing significant damage to homes in Mpophomeni, in the uMngeni Local Municipality in the KZN Midlands. The municipality has announced that Mayor Chris Pappas, together with councillors and officials, are assessing the damage and preparing disaster relief.
The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 4 warning for Saturday, March 21, for severe thunderstorms in parts of northern KZN. Heavy rainfall, damaging winds, hail, and intense lightning are expected, posing risks of flooding, infrastructure damage, and hazardous travel conditions. The affected areas include Jozini, Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Mtubatuba, uMhlathuze, Nongoma and surrounding areas.
Emergency Services Disrupted
In eThekwini Municipality, the Fire Services emergency lines at several Municipal fire stations are currently unavailable due to a severe network disruption caused by the storm. Residents who are unable to reach the usual fire emergency lines are urged to use temporary alternative contact numbers: 076 223 2224 or 063 603 5775.
According to the South African Weather Service, the severe thunderstorms are expected to continue throughout the day, with a high risk of flooding and damage to infrastructure. Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary.
Affected Areas
The following areas have been affected by the storm:
- Mpophomeni, in the uMngeni Local Municipality
- Jozini, Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Mtubatuba, uMhlathuze, Nongoma and surrounding areas in northern KZN
- eThekwini Municipality, where Fire Services emergency lines are currently unavailable
- Injisuthi Camp in the Drakensberg, which has been closed due to flood damage
