Ramaphosa Rebuts Mchunu on PKTT Disbandment

Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has refused to comment on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s submission to Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, which contradicts his version of events regarding the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT). Mchunu’s spokesperson, Sithembiso Mshengu, declined to comment, stating that the Minister had not seen the submission.

President Ramaphosa’s submission asserts that he was neither consulted nor did he approve the decision to disband the PKTT, contrary to Mchunu’s previous testimony. Ramaphosa claimed he only learned of Mchunu’s directive to disband the PKTT from National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola on February 1, 2025.

Madlanga Commission of Inquiry

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, established by Ramaphosa, is currently investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption, and political interference in the justice system. The commission’s final report is expected to play a crucial role in determining the fate of Mchunu, who is currently on special leave.

According to Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, the President will wait for the final report from the Madlanga Commission before taking action against Mchunu. This decision is in line with Ramaphosa’s commitment to allowing the commission to complete its work before making any decisions.

Background on the PKTT Disbandment

The PKTT was established to investigate political killings in KwaZulu-Natal. Mchunu’s decision to disband the unit was met with widespread criticism, with many arguing that it would undermine efforts to combat political violence in the region.

As the Madlanga Commission continues its investigation, the country waits with bated breath for the outcome. The commission’s findings are expected to have significant implications for the justice system and the fight against corruption in South Africa.
