Limpopo Floods Claim Lives: 2 Men Missing, 1 Dead

Limpopo communities are on high alert as heavy rains and flooding continue to threaten lives and property across the province. Two men remain missing after being swept away by floodwaters, highlighting the ongoing dangers posed by overflowing rivers and dams during the rainy season.

A 36-year-old man was swept away by the Nwanedi River in Khubvi Village, Vhembe District, on March 9, 2026, while a 53-year-old man went missing at Makuleke Dam in Collins Chabane Local Municipality on March 3, 2026. At least one other person has lost their life in recent flooding incidents.

Flood Warnings and Safety Protocols

The MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements & Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA), Mr Basikopo Makamu, warned communities to take the threat seriously. “We have seen videos and pictures of people crossing overflowing river streams and bridges,” he said. “This is a very dangerous exercise and must be condemned in all strongest possible terms. Community members must assist government to preserve lives during rainy season by complying with all safety protocols.”

The Provincial Disaster Management Centre, together with departments such as Public Works, Basic Education, Social Development, and local non-governmental organizations, is working around the clock to provide relief to affected residents and restore livelihoods disrupted by the floods. Impact on Education and Infrastructure

In response to the floods, the Limpopo Department of Education has temporarily suspended schooling in several flood-affected districts, including Vhembe and Mopani, with Capricorn South and Waterberg also impacted by flooding and structural damage. The suspension, effective from Monday March 16 and Tuesday March 17, was aimed at protecting the safety of learners and educators amid impassable roads, damaged school buildings, and potential security risks.

According to the Department of Basic Education, the safety of children is the priority. Parents and guardians are urged not to force learners to attempt crossing flooded bridges or rivers.

Here are some key safety tips to follow during flooding:

  • Stay away from rivers and dams
  • Avoid crossing flooded bridges or roads
  • Follow evacuation instructions from local authorities
  • Keep phone lines open for emergency calls

MEC Makamu emphasized that public cooperation is essential. “Community members must remain extra vigilant, especially near rivers and dams. Following safety protocols saves lives,” he said.
