Proteas Women’s allrounder Nadine de Klerk has become an instant millionaire after being bought for £170 000 (R3.77 million) by London Spirit at The Hundred’s first-ever player auction.
De Klerk, 26, has been in sublime form since last year’s 50-over World Cup where she smashed 208 runs at an average of 52 and strike-rate of 131.64. It included a whirlwind unbeaten 84 against eventual champions India during the group stages.
She continued that form through to the recent Women’s Premier League (WPL) where she showed off her secondary skill, claiming 16 wickets to drive Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to the championship title. According to ICC Cricket, the WPL has been a game-changer for women’s cricket, providing a platform for players to showcase their skills.
The Hundred Auction
De Klerk will join her Proteas teammate and fellow star allrounder Marizanne Kapp. The veteran, who bowled the first-ever ball in The Hundred, is two-times champion, having played pivotal roles in both campaigns for Oval Invincibles.
Kapp was, however, released by the Invincibles at the end of last season which allowed London Spirit to pre-sign her for £130,000 (R2.88m). Proteas captain Laura Wolvaardt will also feature in The Hundred in the 2026 season after being retained by the Southern Brave for £75,000 (R1.66m)
Other Proteas Players
Fellow Proteas Tazmin Brits and Sune Luus went unsold at the auction, as did allrounder Chloe Tryon along with former international teammate, fast bowler Shabnim Ismail. Tryon has previously featured for London Spirit and Ismail for the Welsh Fire.
The Proteas Women’s team are currently in New Zealand preparing for five-match T20I series against the current Women’s T20 World Champions.
