Lamola Summons US Ambassador Over Hate Speech Row

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola has summoned US Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III to explain his recent comments on the “Kill the Boer” chant, which were deemed anti-diplomatic. The US diplomat had attended a BizNews conference in Hermanus, Western Cape, where he sparked controversy by stating that the chant constitutes hate speech, despite the South African judiciary ruling otherwise.

According to Minister Lamola, the US Ambassador’s remarks were unacceptable and went against established etiquette and international protocols. “While South Africa welcomes public diplomacy and the strengthening of bilateral ties, we emphasised that such engagements must remain consistent with established etiquette and international protocols. In this regard, we have called in Ambassador Bozell to explain his anti-diplomatic remarks,” he said during a media briefing on Wednesday.

Backtracking on Criticisms

Earlier, Ambassador Bozell took to his official Twitter account to clarify his position on the matter, stating that his personal view aligns with many South Africans who view the song as harmful. However, he reiterated that the US government respects the independence of South Africa’s judiciary, which had ruled that the chant does not meet the legal definition of hate speech. As stated on the US Department of State website, diplomatic relations between countries are built on mutual respect and understanding.
