IEC Announces Voter Registration Weekend June 20-21

The Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced a voter registration weekend for the local government elections, set to take place on 20 and 21 June. This was revealed by IEC chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo at a press briefing in Centurion on Tuesday. Mamabolo told journalists that the IEC anticipates Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa will proclaim an election date once voter registration is completed that weekend.

According to the IEC, this means South Africans will have to wait until June to know exactly when they will head to the polls. The voter registration weekend is a crucial step in the lead-up to the local government elections, which will determine the leadership of municipalities across the country. The South African government has emphasized the importance of citizen participation in the electoral process.

Voter Registration Process

The IEC has outlined the voter registration process, which will take place over the weekend of 20 and 21 June. During this time, eligible voters will be able to register to vote at their local voting stations. The IEC has also encouraged voters to check their registration status online or at their local voting station.
