South Africans using Telkom services will once again have to dig deep into their pockets after the telecommunications giant announced that mobile and fixed-line tariffs will rise from April 1, 2026. Telkom said that the increases are necessary due to rising operational costs and ongoing investment required to maintain and improve network services.

According to the company, the increases will apply to post-paid mobile voice plans, selected LTE bundles, roaming data plans, and certain SmartBroadband/LTE subscription fees. “Effective from 1 April 2026, most mobile voice plans, roaming data plans, as well as certain SmartBroadband / LTE subscription fees of the tariff plan will be increased,” Telkom said.

Telkom Price Increase Details

An average price increase of 6.5% will be implemented across all mobile plans, although individual percentage between plans might differ. The company confirmed that plan benefits, such as included voice minutes, SMS allowances, and data allocations, will remain unchanged, and that device installation fees and other recurring charges are not affected.

Telkom will also raise fixed-line and fibre tariffs, with legacy voice products up 10%, current fixed-line plans up 6%, and fibre subscriptions increasing by 6%. This move is likely to affect many South African households and businesses, who are already struggling with the rising cost of living, as statistics show that the country is experiencing a significant increase in consumer prices.

Impact on Consumers

The price increase is expected to have a significant impact on consumers, particularly those who rely heavily on Telkom services. To mitigate the effects of the price hike, consumers can consider exploring alternative service providers or negotiating with Telkom to see if they can offer any discounts or promotions. Here are some tips for consumers:

  • Review your current plan and see if you can downgrade to a cheaper option
  • Consider switching to a different service provider
  • Negotiate with Telkom to see if they can offer any discounts or promotions

As the cost of living continues to rise, it is essential for consumers to be aware of the changes in the market and to take proactive steps to manage their expenses. By being informed and taking advantage of available options, consumers can minimize the impact of the Telkom price hike and ensure that they are getting the best value for their money.
