Hit-and-Run Tragedy: Cop Involved

A mother’s worst nightmare has come true after she discovered that her 21-year-old son had been lying in a mortuary for months following a fatal hit-and-run incident in Bellville, allegedly involving an off-duty police officer. The incident occurred on November 30, 2025, and the circumstances surrounding it are still under investigation. Abigail Scott, the devastated mother, explained that she last saw her son Alex on November 23, 2025, and had been searching for him ever since.

Scott stated that the family spent weeks searching for Alex, visiting every shelter and even filing a missing persons report at the police station. However, it wasn’t until Valentine’s Day that she received the devastating news that Alex had been in the mortuary since the day of the incident. According to the South African Police Service, a culpable homicide case was registered following the death, and the investigation is ongoing.

Investigation Ongoing

The incident has raised serious concerns about police accountability, with allegations that the off-duty officer was removed from the scene by two police officers attached to Ravensmead police station. Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson Phaladi Shuping stated that the matter does not fall under its mandate. The SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Andrè Traut, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that any police officer found to have acted unlawfully will face the consequences.
