A motorist in Jozini attempted to bribe Road Traffic Inspectorate officers with R700 and braai meat after being arrested for drunk driving. The incident occurred during the ongoing #NenzaniLaEzweni Operation, which aims to reduce road fatalities and improve safety on the province’s roads.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport and Human Settlements MEC, Siboniso Duma, reported that the motorist was intercepted in Umkhuze while driving under the influence of alcohol and exceeding the speed limit. The driver offered the officers R500 and later increased the amount to R700, along with braai meat, in an attempt to avoid arrest.
Drunk Driving and Bribery
According to MEC Duma, the attempted bribery was captured on camera and will be used in court to ensure a successful conviction. The MEC praised the Road Traffic Inspectorate officers for their integrity and commitment to their duties, stating that their actions will help to reverse the prevailing culture of bribery in the province.
The incident is not an isolated one, as a similar case occurred in January where a father and his daughter were arrested for drunk driving during a Road Traffic Inspectorate operation in Mtubatuba. The daughter had arrived intoxicated to collect her arrested father, and both were taken into custody.
Efforts to Reduce Road Fatalities
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport’s Road Traffic Inspectorate has been conducting ongoing operations to reduce road fatalities and improve safety on the province’s roads. The department has been working tirelessly to remove reckless drivers from the roads and to promote a culture of responsible driving.
Some of the key initiatives include:
- Conducting regular roadblocks and checkpoints to catch drunk drivers
- Increasing awareness about the dangers of drunk driving through education and outreach programs
- Collaborating with other law enforcement agencies to share best practices and resources
